Klifhanger - art on location

Klifhanger was created in 2007 by analogy with the Chambres d'Amis. In 1989, Jan Hoet conceived and implemented this spoken concept in Ghent. Make artworks in living rooms and let the public follow a beautiful route. The exhibition in Ghent was the beginning of a democratization wave of the exhibition space. Was art especially intended for indoors, in the 1990s it was exhibited in windows, greenhouses, factories and other locations.

In the 21st century this trend continued. By placing art in another environment, she gets a conceptual load, that is, you assume that art and life should show an intimate relationship. That has always been the intention of avant-gardists in art. Because art often tends to be elite, you will always see opposites. Even in this time, art continues to be closer to everyday life.

Klifhanger has also used this concept from the beginning. Artists make something for a location in and around Den Hoorn on Texel. That can be in nature, on a plot, at a barn or church. Political, social and geographical aspects are involved in the projects.
Klifhanger wants to work with famous and unknown artists and upcoming talents. She wants to be small-scale and high-quality, and accessible to a wide audience.
Each year there is another theme. In 2018 the theme is 'Heritage'.

Erik Alkema 1974 - Groningen - Visual artist, filmmaker www.erikalkema.com
Vloot
A sculptural installation of fleece fabric and wood, a reflection on the passage of time
About the sea that takes and makes islands
About the nullity and adaptability of man
About the sea that gives (and creates employment)
Learn about navigation and safe routes
About the delusions of man who think he can keep the sea in check
About the sea that will take again in the near future
About being prepared

Martina Arrebout1974 - Garsthuizen - Student at the Academie De Werker - www.academiedewerker.nl
Meierblis
Inspired by the available materials, shadow or light, I respond to an object or space. This creates a new image through the use of a minimum of elements. When the twilight enters, the Meierblis is lit on 30 April at all villages on Texel. This recurring event is part of the Texel intangible heritage. The big fire where Texel's clean ship and burn waste has inspired me to come to a work made from discarded globes. This email address is being protected from spambots. Rachel van Balen1980 - Groningen - Visual artist
If the fence is from the dam
In 2016 I painted the Ameland lighthouse for the Kunstmaand in 2016. The theme was 'Over the Horizon', which connected Scandinavia with Ameland. I painted the sea creatures that swim between them. This year I can participate in Klifhanger 2018, the art route on Texel. The theme here is 'Heritage', because 2018 has been declared the European Year of Cultural Heritage by the European Commission. For this art route I want to make a new painted version of a sheep pen, with a matching sheep breed. The viewer is allowed to take a look at the sheep fines, and as a shepherd's keeper herself a piece of cultural heritage. www.rachelvanbalen.nl

Jan Blank - 1990
 - www.janblank.com
Minerva Groningen, cum laude.

Schapenboet (skeepeboet)
When it starts to dawn, the light from within the object will become brighter and it will transform into a luminous penalty that reveals a new landscape that will only be visible at night. As if the daytime penance in the middle of the landscape conceals a mysterious landscape that can only be seen when it is dark. "It's nice to get things together in a crazy way". On the photo right basalt blocks.

Boerstra Engineering - www.boerstra-engineering.nl
(Re)storing the land(scape)
Apologizing to nature
Boerstra Engineering is involved, among other things, with changes in the landscape, with the construction of models, proposals and solutions. Within the framework of renewed insights, plans have been made to make corrections to the Texel landscape.

Kees Boevé - 1982
Texel and Kees have been going back 35 years, my first birthday I celebrated there, and my last one too. When the city comes out of my throat, I take the ferry, the salt on your skin within two hours, and as the age changes, the taste changes over which places of the island attract the most.
Motel Moeilijk
(Motel Difficult)
As I visited the island, looking for a place, looking for inspiration, he was waiting for me in the middle of the pasture for years. Not quite alone, recently half inhabited, by hairy guests. Motel Difficult was born, once abandoned and flogged by wind and salt. Now reinstated, or actually revalued on solar energy for lovers and passers-by, for islanders and workers...

Cobie Bremer - 1956, Oosterend Texel
Winner Audience Award 2018 artists association Zout Texel
Along the garden path of my grandmother

"A farmyard, the tree girth full of snowdrops. This was my grandmother's garden. The snowdrop, a delicate flower, a glimmer of spring in the still dark winter days, a harbinger of what is to come. Once found in a good spot, this flower grows and multiplies exuberantly. And although the person who has planted these bluebells no longer lives, the heritage blossoms every year." This email address is being protected from spambots. Ingrid Davids - 1986, Vlagtwedde - Visual artist
Gefossiliseerde wolken in de sneeuwklokjeskwekerij
(Fossilized clouds in the snowdrops nursery)
"Since graduating, I have been focusing more and more on archaeological research and constructing the storyline behind my assemblies in that line, my work is created by means of ordering, the elements I use are residual forms or remnants of events. A piece of styrofoam and wooden fries, and the "family" already consists of 30-40 fossilized clouds and for Klifhanger I mimicked a situation in which I show fossils that have only been observed on the island." www.ingriddavids.nl

Froukje Doodkorte - 1982 - Rotterdam
Student Lecturer Fine Arts and Design, Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam
Klifhanger forms the conclusion of the visual research that covered the entire school year 2017-2018. The work that Froukje shows on Texel comes from a personal search for space. For Klifhanger, she continued this research and linked it to the theme of 'Heritage' by examining how heritage and space influence each other. This email address is being protected from spambots. Dagmar Drews - 1968, Heessen (Germany)
Student Lecturer Fine Arts and Design, Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam
Art can hold a mirror to man. Sometimes very straight, raw and confronting. Sometimes indirectly, subtly packaged. Not only land, house and possessions are heritage - the family from which one originates is our greatest legacy. Dagmar Drews examines on the basis of her own family biography how she can express her legacy visually and develop her own imagery. It is not only about her personal history, but about what the viewer can recognize. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Mireille Hentenaar - 1968 - Roosendaal
Student Lecturer Fine Arts and Design, Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam
In her work, Mireille Hentenaar seeks out the boundaries of fantasy, past and reality. The beach and the sea in particular are her sources of inspiration. She has translated special finds in an infinite space into organic abstract works by ecoline. They seem to take us into a mysterious world of memories that we once in a while bring up. These works fit in well with the theme of Heritage since the Wadden Sea and its hidden shipwrecks are UNESCO World Heritage.

Mare Hilstra - Texel
Mare Hilstra works together with Friso Wiersma and Ashok Bhadra
Between light and dark
In this installation in which furniture, poetry and drawing come together, the visitor is invited to take a seat on a stool and wait for the dark and / or the silence. The stools are a modern variant of a 17th century model. On the stools, Mare and Ashok make poems and drawings inspired by the landscape and also on the old Dutch tradition of 'twilight' or'skemereop 'on Texel. The installation is a collaboration between designer Friso Wiersma, Indian artist Ashok Bhadra and (ex-island) poet Mare Hilstra. This artwork is connected to the poetry happening Skemere that takes place on 15 June.

Ton Kalle - 1955, Terneuzen - visual artist, stonemason
The work of Ton Kalle has a strong bond with nature. Stone is the medium, where the stone is left as much as possible in its value. Simplicity, silence and tranquility play a meditative role here. References to primal forces and the power of nature surfaced intuitively.
The return of De Vliegende Hollander
Den Hoorn's warehouses looked from the dunes to VOC ships, which they could safely take to the Rede van Texel. The island of Texel owes its existence to the high back of boulder clay, a mixture of loam, gravel and stones, of which the cliff and the Hoge Berg are part. The history of the sheds in combination with a boulder from the boulder clay brings me to an old legend: The Flying Dutchman does his homeport.

Garance Koning - 1994 - Ipora (Brazilië)
Student Lecturer Fine Arts and Design, Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam

Mirjam Koornneef - 19.. - Rotterdam
Student Lecturer Fine Arts and Design, Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam
For Klifhanger 2018, Mirjam went into dialogue with various blind and visually impaired people from Rotterdam to compare their urban environment with that of Texel through her self-developed "poetry methodology". For Texel and for Texel visitors this gives an opportunity to experience and view Texel in a different way. The poems can be seen in a short surrealistic Art film in the former Jan Drijverschool. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

CellaVie - Marcella Kuiper - 1968, Haarlem - Video / light artist

Allodium - Traces from the past
A site-specific light installation with the theme heritage.

Trudy Oosterhuis - 1987 - Groningen
"The farm is my studio. The materials that are present there form the starting point of my research. I am looking for their expressive possibilities. With these materials I create two and three dimensional images. I want to make a connection between the world of farm life / nature and that of art." www.trudyoosterhuis.nl
